Airports

The issue

Airport authorities are major energy users and their operations have a substantial environmental impact.

C02 emissions caused by burning aviation fuel during flights is the most obvious cause of this impact, and authorities have a corporate responsibility to manage the effects of this, especially as passenger numbers continue to rise year on year.

This also places even greater emphasis on reducing emissions from other areas such as heating.

The solution

Airports need to manage their climate impact by formulating energy strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet C02 objectives. This includes identifying opportunities to invest in energy-efficient technology, and reducing the impact of existing equipment installed at airports.

CHP and community heating can play an important part in this strategy, delivering significant year-on-year financial benefits and significantly cutting C02 emissions. In addition, waste heat from the CHP plant can be used to provide heating for terminals on site, thus reducing the need for additional power generation.

Case study: BAA - Heathrow Airport

A new landmark for London, Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 (T5) will be one of the world's most exciting airport terminals. Due to open on 30 March 2008, BAA's £4.3 billion investment will cater for around 30 million passengers annually
