£1.2 million

Owned by the London Borough of Sutton, the Roundshaw Estate was originally built in the 1960’s. To ensure its ability to exceed modern building standards and offer high quality housing, it is currently undergoing significant redevelopment. As part of this, the Council was keen to replace the existing heating and hot water system with a more efficient CHP scheme. To this end, they put the project out to tender with Vital Energi ultimately winning the contract for Phase 1.
In response to the brief, we have installed a network of over 5km of Alstom Power FlowSystems preinsulated pipe to serve as the new mains. This pipework is complemented by the use of Band Muff fusion welded joints, which extend the life span of the pipes from 30 to approximately 50 years. What’s more, this unique jointing technology also ensures fewer actual joints are required, driving down costs and future maintenance requirements. Plus, further savings have been achieved through the use of existing pipes wherever possible. The new mains have been linked to 40 plant room connections, two schools, one community centre and a retirement home.
The whole network enjoys the protection of a state-of-the-art alarm surveillance system, which continually monitors the network for the presence of moisture in the pipe insulation. It can detect this to an accuracy of within one metre and by providing pre-emptive alerts, allows the operator to take corrective action before any expensive problems occur.
Conclusion
Phase 1 of the project was completed on time and on budget. Furthermore, the London Borough Sutton has invited Vital Energi to carry out 23 further extensions to the scheme.
