Barrat Homes has successfully blended three brand new apartment buildings with the careful restoration of a terrace of Grade II listed Georgian townhouses – The Tachbrook Triangle.

"The internal pipework installation looks beautiful and neat, and very accurately positioned it’s a shame it will have to be boxed in. Vital Energi have taken time and trouble in their work which compliments the rest of pipework being undertaken by mechanical sub-contractor.."

Ted Green, Barratt West London, Senior Technical Coordinator

The development in Pimlico, London consists of ‘an attractive fusion of the old and the new’. The new 21,000sq ft triangular shaped building incorporates an 8-storey mixed-use apartment block involving 37 contemporary private apartments and 17 affordable apartments for Dominion Housing Group, with the first two-storeys occupied by Westminster Primary Care Trust. The development also includes 17 Grade II listed townhouses. These exclusive properties are complemented by their prices at £375,000 for a one bedroom apartment to £935,000 for a 3-bedroom townhouse. Working for Barratt West London Vital Energi was appointed to provide a turnkey heating solution for this urban landwark development.

Vital Energi's expertise was required to provide internal community heating pipework connection from the Pimlico District Heating Undertaking (PDHU) to the new building at The Tachbrook Triangle. PDHU is the UK's oldest community heating network operated by City West Homes were heat is generated at a central boilerhouse providing heat and hot water to over 3000 homes and commercial buildings.
The work included the installation of the internal distribution pipework and also the installation of Vital Aqua Varm Hydraulic Interface Units providing heating and hot water to each of the new apartments.
The scope of the works was extended to include the installation of a hydraulic interface unit for the Primary Care Trust to provide hot water to a doctors surgery. The scheme incorporates a meter reading solution with radio communications module supplied and installed by Vital Energi to accurately measure heat consumption inside the dwellings. Data is collected from each meter by “Touring” the premises with a wireless Bluetooth receiver and handheld computer to receive real-time on-demand data.

The Benefits:

  • Reduced CO2 emissions
  • Utilising heat from existing nearby community heating scheme
  • Instantaneous heat available at all times
  • Residents only pay for actual heat used

Conclusion

The advantage of the radio system is that there is no need for ‘door knocking’ the meters so it’s more cost effective than other data collection methods.
