Energy centres

What are energy centres?

Energy centres are at the core of any centralised energy scheme; they are quite literally the engine room where the heat, power and cooling is generated.

How do they vary?

Their size very much depends on their exact use. Some centres are designed to serve just a handful of dwellings, while others meet the energy needs of several thousands homes. Larger schemes may also serve community buildings, as well as commercial, industrial and retail premises.

The plant’s configuration can also vary enormously, often depending on whether the energy centre is required to provide just heat, or heat and power, for example. Equipment typically includes gas fired boilers working in conjunction with a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, while a growing number of schemes also include wood-fuelled boilers too.

Whatever the scale or scheme requirements Vital Energi has the expertise to deliver the right solution for your particular needs.

How much preparation do clients need to do?

Because Vital Energi can design and install energy centres to a client’s outline or performance specification, it’s not necessary to carry out any preliminary work before approaching us.

We believe in a partnership approach to all our projects – it helps to avoid confusion and ensures that everyone is absolutely clear about the desired outcomes. From the outset, we work closely with all our clients to determine the right technical solution before implementing the scheme within an agreed budget.

What about on-going costs?

One of the differences about working with Vital Energi is that we take responsibility for providing a complete service.

Aspart of the design process Vital Energi considers the whole life-cycle cost of the system, including operational costs and plant replacement.

Vital Energi are able to assist clients with the design and build of any energy centre scheme. Typically this could include the installation of plant and equipment including CHP or trigeneration, boilers including biomass, controls, fuel storage, thermal storage and pumps.

In addition we can offer piece of mind through our comprehensive operation and maintenance package.

Case study: Charles Dickens Estate, Portsmouth

The brief for this next generation heating scheme for a Portsmouth local authority was to replace existing heating system with an energy efficient CHP scheme to serve 800 flats. The result was lower heating bills for the client and instant
