Annual Energy Statement gives energy saving equal priority with energy production
Gas to 'feature strongly' in UK energy mix
Heat Strategy to be published next year
The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change presented his
second Annual Energy Statement to Parliament today. The Statement
reflected a new emphasis in energy policy on energy efficiency, with a
commitment that 'energy saving is now an equal priority with energy
production'. The Statement also recognised that 'gas will continue to
feature strongly in our energy mix'.
Graham Meeks, Director of district heating and CHP industry body the
CHPA, commented on today’s Statement:
"It is essential that energy efficiency is the foremost priority in
our energy policy, and today's announcement is an important
commitment to that goal. The Secretary of State has also
recognised that gas will continue to feature strongly in our
energy mix, and when used in the right way this highly flexible
fuel can play a key role in delivering an affordable and practical
decarbonisation pathway. He has committed to making our
homes and businesses less wasteful, and combined heat and
power will be essential in securing this goal for the gas that we
continue to use.
‘Only yesterday, in an address to the CHPA annual conference,
the Energy Minister Greg Barker pointed to 'a new ambitious role
for CHP' in the context of the ‘paramount importance’ of energy
efficiency. The new heat strategy, announced in today’s
Statement, provides the opportunity to set out the policies that
will see CHP helping consumers heat their homes and businesses
securely and affordably."
