New Carbon Reduction Solution for the Olympic National Sports Centre (03/09/2010)

Vital Energi have been selected to deliver a low carbon solution at the iconic 1960’s National Sports Centre (NSC) at Crystal Palace. The scheme is set to reduce CO2 emissions as well as operating costs, thus contributing towards the Mayor of London’s 2025 carbon reduction target of 60%.

In order to achieve the Mayor of London’s target, the London Development Agency (LDA) is supporting the scheme by providing £900,000 of funding.

Being a 1960’s ‘Grade 2’ listed building, the NSC has inherent inefficiencies within the heating and electricity systems which requires updating, as the NSC will be used as a training facility during the lead-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Vital Energi will be responsible for the design, supply and installation of a 330kWe Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine as well as the removal and replacement of a redundant boiler with a new 1,800kW gas-fired boiler. The CHP engine will generate heat and power simultaneously from the same single fuel source and this technology, coupled with the new boiler replacement in the NSC’s existing energy centre, will reduce the buildings environmental impact and increase its efficiency.

In addition to replacing and upgrading the capital equipment Vital Energi will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the new and existing plant and equipment inside the energy centre under a long term contract for 15 years.

Specialist advisors to the NSC, Cynergin, assisted in matters both related to best practice in procurement as well vetting tender proposals. Cynergin recommended the appointment of Vital Energi.

Vital Energi’s flexible solutions and expertise in CHP energy centre schemes will ensure that the NSC will make a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions in London as well as saving both running costs and energy consumption.
