Commonwealth Games Athletes Village Developers Win Best Development

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village Developers won 'Best Sustainable Development' at the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce's Glasgow Business Awards 2013.

The Athletes' Village is being built by the City Legacy consortium, which is made up of developers and contractors CCG, Cruden, Mactaggart & Mickel and W H Malcolm. Each of whom have an unparalleled local track record of residential development and job creation.

In the short term, the Athletes' Village will provide beds for 6,500 athletes and officials during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. After the Games, it will transform into a lively residential community with housing, amenities and public spaces, some on a riverside setting and offering a wonderful environment for a new family focused community.

The judges were extremely impressed by the sustainability features which include high quality thermal insulation, solar roof mounted thermal panels and a combined heat and power (CHP) based centralised energy system that contributes more than 55 per cent towards the 95 per cent carbon reduction achieved, making the Games "the greenest ever".

Ian Whitelock, Vital Energi's joint managing director, commented: "Vital Energi is very proud to be part of the team that created this successful scheme. Working closely with City Legacy Consortium, we have created a district heating system which is making a significant contribution to the overall Games carbon reduction target of 95 per cent and is expected to result in energy bills around 40 per cent lower than any other power methods to reduce fuel poverty in this part of Glasgow."
