SHEQ Manager - Site Based

The opportunity

Assist the Project Team and Regional SHEQ Manager to manage, mentor and coach site based delivery teams (Contractors and direct employees) implementation of day to day activities and business needs in respect to SHEQ management policies and standards in order to help create safe construction sites. Support Principal Designer function helping compile, plan and manage pre-construction information, check contractor skills and capabilities/competence and feedback any design change during build/installation stage that introduces hazards or impacts positive or negatively risk. Ensure all relevant SHEQ documentation in maintained, formally recorded and correctly stored within the project documentation systems.

About the role

You will be assisting and supporting the Project Team and Regional SHEQ Manager as well as the Principal Designer function to ensure all relevant SHEQ documentation is maintained, formally recorded and correctly stored within the project documentation systems.

Key responsibilities

  • Advise on the application of the Principles of Prevention throughout the project, in compliance with CDM 2015, partnering with design and delivery teams
  • Support project delivery teams by ensuring health and safety in design objectives are established, communicated, understood and delivered by contractors and Vital Energi employees
  • Support and influence practical delivery of the SHEQ strategy / agenda, partnering with design, project delivery team, contractors and maintenance teams to helping detect and raise awareness of potential hazard early during the planning stages, enabling mitigation and response plans to be created that reduce the likelihood of incidents and injuries
  • Use specific knowledge and understanding of legislation and best working practices to assist with the identification of hazards and risks and provide insightful, timely challenges to project leaders/managers/engineers and others in respect to delivery of SHEQ at project level
  • Guide project health and safety activities implemented operational by line managers supervisors and contractors, promoting safe practices
  • Working collaboratively with the project team ensure an organisational approach to health and safety is implemented to a consistently high quality standard. Maintaining a focus on delivering advisory support to enable operations to meet or exceed safety health environmental and quality expectations
  • Taking a risk based approach when determining solutions and initiatives; giving priority to high-risk and complex situations to ensure site based personnel are following VE policies and HSE guidance
  • Gather and using feedback to provide management information on the relevance and effectiveness of policy, systems and processes and help highlight changes to the design that impact application of augmented reality, 3D models, BIM and other technologies used to assess and reduce hazards/risk
  • Taking responsibility for the review and acceptance of Temporary Works Plans relating to excavations, scaffolds and crane locations/movements/lifts
  • Induct all employees; establishing and recording competency and identifying any special requirements for training associated with role/responsibilities
  • Undertaking regular (daily) inspection of site conditions to determine if hazards are present and to establish controls needed to overcome those hazardous situations to ensure so far as is reasonably practicable a hazard-free work environment
  • Review of risk assessments associated with all high-risk and complex works; approving all subcontractors safety plans for lifting and slinging, work at height, work in confined spaces and temporary works
  • Establishing safety standards and policies in respect of emergency response and conducting drills and exercises to help manage emergencies
  • Ensuring employees receive minimum of weekly toolbox talks and briefings on a mix of Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental topics
  • Facilitating employee engagement and participation through monthly site safety committees and regular communication meetings including participative works planning for high-risk and complex works and working with the project management team responding to any employee’s site safety concerns
  • Coordinating registration and removal of hazardous (Special) waste and other waste streams
  • Ensuring a timely and effective response to SHEQ incidents, conducting incident investigations to gather evidence necessary to identify the cause of incident and injuries to determine root causes, documenting findings and recommendations to prevent a re-occurrence
  • Lead health and safety related projects, working with team members and as appropriate other colleagues to effect change as a result of incidents, injuries or recognised trends Work closely with appointed Occupational Health administrator to ensure fit for work certificates for all employees working on site
  • Monitoring project SHEQ performance and through the collection and dissemination of data and monthly reporting feedback to project team managers and the Region SHEQ Manager SHEQ performance on project
  • Assist in delivery of audit programmes to ensure compliance with management systems prompted under ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 standards
  • Share learning and knowledge to contribute to the continuous improvement by recording and sharing good working practises, near misses etc. with project team and wider SHEQ Team
  • Promote and comply with the Company’s policies on health and safety, equality and diversity both in respect to the treatment of others and the delivery of service provided
  • Assist project team with the preparation, maintenance and handover (on project completion) of the Health & Safety file to the client
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of developments in SHEQ
