LEICESTER CITY COUNCIL Aikman Avenue District Heating Scheme Complete

An indication of Vital Energi’s ability to deliver the right solution on time, on brief and on budget is the amount of repeat business we enjoy. Vital Energi have worked with Leicester City Council for many years on the continual extension of their District Heating Network at Aikman Avenue.

Project Overview

As always however, Vital Energi were required to demonstrate best value by once again winning the tender in open competition to extend the scope of the existing system to incorporate a number of additional local buildings. These buildings included a leisure centre, a youth centre, a community centre, Forrest Lodge School and New College North.

  • Safe, reliable and readily available heating
  • Continuity of service
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Reduced CO2 emissions
  • A solution with increased reliability and life expectancy
  • The ability to rectify faults before they result in major costs or disruption thanks to a state-of-the art surveillance system

The Challenge

To extend an existing District Heating Network to connect a number of additional local community buildings and schools.

Vital Energi's Solution

Following on from the brief, Vital Energi installed over 200 metres of preinsulated 100 millimetre diameter pipe. This pipe network also made use of Band Muff fusion welded joints because of their ability to significantly extend the life span of the pipes. This technology also reduces the number of joints required, helping to minimise installation, time and future maintenance costs.

In addition, the extended mains had to cross the A563 Leicester Inner Ring Road - a busy dual carriageway. Demonstrating our ability to cope with difficult and demanding project parameters, Vital Energi achieved this and in such a way as to minimise disruption to road users. Specifically, we employed horizontal directional drilling, a specialist civil engineering technique. We also specified a state-of-the-art alarm/surveillance system to protect the new pipework.

Following on from these successes, the client subsequently asked Vital Energi for further assistance beyond the original brief. This included diverting the District Heating network to accommodate a local college, which was undergoing significant redevelopment.

Ultimately, this project was secured through Vital Energi’s efficiency, innovation and expertise demonstrated throughout our working partnership with Leicester City Council, and has been one which was completed on time, and with minimal disruption – once again proving that Vital Energi deliver value for money.
