Can you talk us through what you were doing initially?

I studied BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. As part of the School of the Built Environment, I gained insight into project management, surveying, and quantity surveying — all of which deepened my understanding of what it takes to deliver successful projects. My first year, I reached out to Aberdeen City Council for experience – they passed on my details to Vital, and the rest is history! During this time, I learned how projects are executed during the construction stage. I got hands-on exposure to health and safety practices like toolbox talks, RAMS, and site inductions. Seeing a heat distribution facility come to life from initial groundworks to handover was incredible.

What are you doing now?

I now work as a Graduate Architectural Technologist in the Glasgow office. I assist in designing distributed energy schemes, energy centres, ASHP compounds, and client-owned assets. My work includes preparing detailed working drawings, building control, and planning submissions, and ensuring compliance with CDM and building regulations. I primarily work within RIBA Stages 3–7 and have already gained broad experiences, including liaising with third-party consultants and clients. Even as a graduate, I've developed a strong foundation in technical design and real-world application.

How do you feel about the opportunities to progress at Vital?

Vital offers fantastic progression opportunities. They support professional development through chartership, on-the-job training, and a clear career path. I genuinely feel part of the team and valued in my role. While I’m currently focused on architectural tasks, I’m excited by the potential to grow — who knows, perhaps I’ll be the company’s first architectural discipline Design Director and board member! Vital is the kind of place where that ambition feels achievable — maybe even in less than 20 years.

I work with people of all experience levels and backgrounds, and the relationships are fantastic — many of us are now friends outside of work. We work hard in a fast-paced environment, but there’s always time for learning and development, which is so important as a graduate.

What experiences have you had outside of your role?

I’ve had opportunities to speak at schools and educate younger generation on the importance of our industry. I recently represented Vital at the Future of Energy event, where I spoke about my career journey. The feedback was amazing, and it reminded me how much people believe in the next generation of green professionals. These experiences have grown my confidence and industry understanding massively.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is seeing designs I’ve worked on come to life on-site. There’s nothing quite like walking around a project and knowing you helped shape it from paper to reality. I also love the collaborative nature of the role — learning from colleagues and constantly developing new skills makes every day different and exciting.

What would you say to someone who’s considering applying for a role at Vital Energi?

I would 100% recommend Vital Energi to anyone considering a role here. The growth I’ve experienced over the past three years has been incredible — I’ve become more confident, skilled, and knowledgeable. If you're thinking about applying — do it! You won’t regret it, and you won’t look back.
