What did you study?

I completed my bachelor’s degree at Queen Mary University of London in Mechanical Engineering. I chose engineering because it satisfied my curiosity about the science behind mechanisms and helped me develop my analytical skills, while also being applicable to a wide range of sectors.

What are you doing now?

I currently work within the design and delivery team, focusing on delivering projects from RIBA stages 3–5. I initially discovered Vital Energi while reading a CIBSE journal case study on the Battersea Power Station project. I was keen to get involved with the building services sector for decarbonisation, and I soon realised that Vital Energi is well-established in this field.

My job consists of many activities, so summarising the design process in a sentence doesn’t do it justice! The main tasks, to name a few, include conducting site surveys, producing drawing layouts and schematics, energy modelling, optioneering (for cost, energy, and efficiency), and performing calculations. The most challenging aspect, in my opinion, is mitigating risks early for the client, all while working under a tight timeline.

What are the opportunities like for progression at Vital?

As Vital Energi continues to grow and explore new opportunities, chances for progress naturally emerge. I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects since day one (apologies for the cliché), which has allowed me to learn practically through experience. There will always be another project to help you develop and upskill. Additionally, there is a wealth of experienced people within the company who offer support and guidance on how to progress. In 20 years, it would be exciting to be a board member in the research and innovation division

The support I’ve received at Vital has mainly come from my colleagues and managers within my team. My learning here has been very organic. Although one might have access to more information than they realise, I’ve found that the main source of knowledge comes from the experience and practical application gained from previous projects. There is no quick guide that can explain it all!

What are the opportunities like outside your day to day responsibilities?

Outside of projects, I’ve had the opportunity to pursue continuous learning by attending training courses and CPDs. I’ve also participated in school career and numerous charity events. In the future, I hope to complete my IEng chartership and expand my engineering skillset within building services and the district heating sector.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Encountering new challenges and coming up with innovative ways to tackle them. Site surveys are especially enjoyable as they give you the opportunity to explore unique and interesting buildings.

What would you say to someone who’s considering applying for a role at Vital Energi?

For anyone considering joining the company as a graduate, I would advise not holding back when it comes to asking questions and to try as many different things as you possibly can.
