Can you talk us through what you were doing initially?

I initially joined Vital as a Graduate Project Accountant after studying BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance at Manchester Metropolitan University and gaining some experience in various finance roles. At first this was mostly shadowing other members of the Commercial Finance team to get an understanding of all the processes which developed into ownership of different areas such as improvement of the Stock Process and Timesheets.

What are you doing now?

My current role is Finance Business Partner which involves working with all areas of the business to put together and analyse financial data. This mostly focuses on pulling together the monthly Revenues and Profits of the contracts but also forecasting and budgeting for the future with the Trading Forecast. I continue to work on Stock and Timesheets, making any changes and improvements where necessary and taking on new challenges such as Fixed Assets with hopefully more coming in the future!

How do you feel about the opportunities to progress at Vital?

I moved into a new role within my first two years and there has been a lot of reorganisation within the Finance Department so from my experience there are plenty of opportunities to progress. Vital have also helped me through my studies towards being a Chartered Accountant which not only helps my personal growth but also allows me to bring my experience into the business.

Ben Desoer, Finance Business Partner

What experiences have you had outside of your role?

Out of my day-to-day role, I’ve presented at Quarterly Finance Meetings, forcing me out of my comfort zone and giving me the chance to share my work with the team. There have been numerous charity and team building days held in the Blackburn Office giving me the chance to work in new teams, meeting people from different departments and riding a mechanical bull.

What is the culture at Vital like?

It’s a fast paced, constantly changing environment with new challenges every day. There’s a focus on internal development and improvement so you feel like you’re evolving in your role along side the business.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Probably the people I work with, not just in the finance department but all over the business. I’ve felt supported in my time here in my personal development and work, always being able to reach out to my manager and team. The nights out and regular buffets aren’t too bad either.

What would you say to someone who’s considering applying for a role at Vital Energi?

Definitely do it, I’ve had great opportunities and learnt a lot in my 3 years here.
