At the beginning of the month, we achieved a UK first with the opening of Seaham Garden Village, a scheme which harnesses heat from an above ground mine water treatment system and distributes it to residents through a heat network.
We have developed the scheme in partnership with the Mining Remediation Authority, Karbon Homes and Durham County Council, to deliver a state-of-the-art energy centre with the capacity to supply heat across the wider development.
In time, the scheme is expected to provide low-carbon heat to up to 750 Karbon Homes properties, demonstrating the potential of mine water heating for the 25% of UK homes and businesses situated above former coal mining areas.
To mark the launch, those involved in the project came together to reflect on the success of the scheme and the benefits that it will bring to the local community.
