The £14.7m Christie Hospital project represents a landmark achievement in healthcare estate decarbonisation. Vital Energi won the contract by demonstrating superior value and capability at one of the UK's most challenging and compact hospital sites in a residential area of Manchester.
What began as a £7.8m infrastructure refresh evolved into a £14.7m comprehensive decarbonisation programme following our successful grant funding applications. The project expansion enabled installation of cutting-edge renewable technologies including air source heat pumps, water source heat pumps, solar PV, and a battery energy storage system.
We successfully transformed heat and electrical provision while maintaining uninterrupted clinical services throughout construction, critical for The Christie's specialist cancer treatment operations, along with research.

Energy Infrastructure Transformation
Our solution delivered a complete overhaul of the hospital's energy systems, replacing aging infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment designed for efficiency and resilience. The installation includes replacement gas-fired Combined Heat and Power plant and new high-efficiency boiler plant, providing reliable baseload capacity essential for critical healthcare operations.
Renewable energy integration includes air source and water source heat pump systems working alongside a solar PV installation and a 2MW/2MWh battery energy storage system. Enhanced control systems optimise performance across all assets, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability.
