Project Overview

Listed on the FTSE100, Investec is a specialist international banking group. The company’s ‘Green Team’ staff engagement initiative delivers a number of environmental benefits while Vital Efficienci has helped to identify and accelerate the bank’s energy and carbon savings.

The Challenge

Annual energy costs exceed £1m at the bank’s Gresham Street Head Quarters alone, so managing energy consumption makes clear business sense while supporting the bank’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Investec engaged Vital Efficienci in 2008 to help it systematically save energy and reduce carbon emissions, building on the bank’s ‘Green Team’ activity.

Vital Energi's Solution

Investec utilised our virtual Intelligent Energy Manager service which gave access to all Vital Efficienci’s specialists, who developed and delivered an energy plan to meet a 15 percent reduction by 2012 and also managed the bank’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) reporting and data management obligations.

Smart metering (aM&T) and specialist carbon management software, EnSMART was installed. Combined with on-site energy assessments, this enabled an action to be prioritised that maximised energy and carbon reductions at an economic cost. Improved Building Management System (BMS) scheduling, plant optimisation, deployment of VSDs to heating and air conditioning systems and lighting upgrade projects were identified and implemented.

Vital Efficienci also actively engaged staff by displaying real-time energy consumption data via the trading floor’s share price ticker.

Conclusion

Investec exceeded its energy saving target in 2011, one year early, and have achieved 10 percent year-on-year reductions, saving £120,000 at the Gresham Street site in year one alone. In April 2013 Investec met their challenging 34 percent carbon target seven years early, despite a 40 percent increase in headcount.

Vital Efficienci's management of Investec’s CRC reporting led to the bank meeting its CRC compliance obligations in full. Our consultants also helped Investec to become the first bank to gain Carbon Trust Standard, helping it rank in the top 5 percent of the CRC performance league table.
